Nokia Android smartphone “Normandy” resurfaces

Supposing you've had a peek at the Nokia smartphone platform over the past few years, you know good and well two things are true. The first is that Nokia runs either Windows Phone or an odder, smaller operating system called Asha. The second is that the phones made by Nokia are brightly colored, uniquely shaped, and certainly aren't made for Android. This second affirmation seems to be breaking apart at the seams here at the start of 2014.
What we've heard of for the past few months - and years, even - is that Nokia has been open to working with Android, but was restricted by their contract with Microsoft. Here now that Nokia is literally owned by Microsoft in 2014, it seems that a break has occurred. However little sense it makes now that one owns the other, Microsoft's Nokia seems to have sprung a leak, one that contains a device with codename "Normandy."
This little beast works with an operating system that's at least based on Android, working with many of the same icons and a pull-down status bar up top. There also appears to be two SIM card slots, as evidenced by the two status bars up above the display up front, and a rather unique user interface with simple one-color icons and short text titles. Cheap Android Phones for Sale .
This machine is "also simpler than Asha yo", says a fellow by the name of Zhang Zhicheng who provides one of the leaked photos this week. Another photo comes from Twitter user Seamissu through GSMArena where they've got essentially the same phone, but this time with a cover on top. This is more likely an engineering sample in a case that hides (somewhat) the looks of the device while it's being tested.
It would be a rather strange occurrence if this device actually did see the light of day, but stranger things have happened. Microsoft could just as well be allowing this device's creation to unfold to see some ultra-low-cost sales internationally while their Windows Phone devices continue to build steam right alongside.

The tablet/PC hybrid

A caveat to this thinking is that consumers will find the idea of a Cheap Tablet PC and PC combined together as an attractive option. Perhaps when a consumer looks to replace their PC they will find something like Microsoft's Surface an attractive offering. Many in the PC ecosystem are hoping this is the case but I am still skeptical.
I think what corporate employees, small business workers, and even consumers want is the best PC for their needs and the best tablet for their needs. This means they will continue to buy two separate devices of their choosing that best does all the things they want.
While I applaud the efforts of Microsoft, Intel, and others in the PC ecosystem to work to build 2 in 1 PCs and tablets I'm not optimistic that they will appeal to the masses. I believe some segments of both business and consumer customers will gravitate to these form factors but I don't believe they will make up the majority of sales of either PCs or Cheap Tablet PC .
I believe the market for PCs and tablet will swing like a pendulum. The years that PCs aren't being refreshed as much tablets sales will boom higher and vice-versa. For everyone who cares about hardware from IT, to the OEMs who make the devices, managing refresh rates and building products that take advantage of refresh years will be critical.
But of course truly innovative products and lower price points could produce a hot seller in either camp regardless of refresh cycles. Given the product maturity on the PC side, I think another breakout tablet is far more likely.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 “Ultra HD” processor heading to devices in 2014

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 may be the high-end processor mobile users are looking to have power their handset at the moment, however a new top of the line has been announced this morning. Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 805 “Ultra HD” processor which will feature the an Adreno 420 GPU and is described as being the “first mobile processor to offer system-level Ultra HD support.”
The Snadragon 805 will be a Krait 450 quad-core CPU and the first to run at up to 2.5GHz per core. Qualcomm also touts the Snapdragon 805 as having superior memory bandwidth support of up to 25.6GB/second. This essentially, should mean apps will run smoother and that users should see an improved multimedia and web browsing experience.
Qualcomm notes this setup will be able to offer 4K video capture and playback as well as enhanced dual camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs) for “superior performance, multitasking, power efficiency and mobile user experiences.” Furthermore, according to Qualcomm, that would be a first for mobile processors.
In addition to the Snapdragon 805, there was also another announcement from Qualcomm, the fourth-generation 3G/LTE multimode modem and RF transceiver chip. This includes the Qualcomm Gobi 9×35 and the RF transceiver chip, the Qualcomm WTR392. These are both said to be able to “offer significant improvements in performance, power consumption and printed circuit board area requirements.”
For OEMs, the combination of the Gobi 9×35 modem and WTR3925 chipset enables a powerful, single platform that can be used to launch LTE Advanced devices faster at a global scale. Together, these solutions are designed to deliver up to 2X faster LTE Advanced, CAT 6 up to 300 Mbps, along with dual carrier HSUPA and dual band multi-carrier HSPA+.
That all having been said, while we suspect some will be hoping to see a Snapdragon 805 powered device arrive in their hands sometime soon, these will not be arriving for a little while. Qualcomm has said the Snapdragon 805 is being tested now and expected to arrive during the first half of 2014. Furthermore, the Gobi 9×35 and WTR3925 are expected to arrive sometime early next year.
